James Gunn is officially returning to direct the sequel to the Superman reboot, following the film’s global success.
The announcement was made by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav during the company’s earnings call on August 7, marking a major step in the studio’s DC Universe relaunch.
The news comes after the recent success of the Superman reboot starring David Corenswet, which was released in early July and has already earned $125 million domestically and $550 million worldwide. Gunn, who directed the first installment, had previously hinted at a sequel during press interviews but never confirmed whether it would be a standalone continuation or part of a broader storyline.
Now, it’s official—James Gunn will helm the sequel, continuing his vision for a revitalized DC Universe. Alongside Peter Safran, Gunn was appointed in 2022 to reset DC Studios, aiming to deliver a cohesive and competitive cinematic universe that can rival Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The rebooted DCU began with a fresh take on Superman, setting the foundation for an ambitious 10-year plan filled with sequels, spinoffs, and interconnected storylines. Upcoming projects include Supergirl and Clayface in 2026, as well as a reimagined Wonder Woman film—all part of Gunn and Safran’s long-term roadmap.
While Superman’s revival has delivered a strong start, the DCU still faces the challenge of building compelling narratives around lesser-known heroes. Unlike the widely recognized Clark Kent, many other DC characters have yet to resonate with mainstream audiences.
Nevertheless, the confirmation of Gunn’s involvement in the next Superman movie reflects Warner Bros.’ confidence in his creative leadership and the momentum of their reimagined DC Universe.
