Director James Gunn has revealed exciting new updates about the highly anticipated Superman: Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to 2025’s blockbuster Superman film.
During his recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Gunn opened up about the storyline, character dynamics, and filming schedule for the upcoming DCU project.
The filmmaker confirmed that the script for Superman: Man of Tomorrow is nearly complete, explaining that he had been working on it since taking over as co-head of DC Studios. “I promised myself I’d slow down a little, but the Superman sequel has been my priority,” Gunn shared. He also announced that filming is expected to begin in April 2026.
Gunn teased fans with a major plot twist, revealing that the new story will feature Superman and Lex Luthor joining forces against a greater enemy. “It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” he said.
Interestingly, Gunn also emphasized that this installment will shine just as much spotlight on Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, as it will on Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet. “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly,” Gunn admitted, hinting at a deeper exploration of Luthor’s complex personality.
The first Superman film, released in July 2025, was a massive success, grossing over $611 million worldwide and reinvigorating the iconic franchise under Gunn’s leadership. With the sequel, DC Studios aims to build on that momentum by delivering a more layered narrative, balancing action with character-driven storytelling.
Superman: Man of Tomorrow is officially slated to hit theaters on July 9, 2027, promising fans a fresh take on the legendary rivalry between Superman and Lex Luthor—this time with an unexpected alliance at its core.
With Gunn at the helm, fans can expect a thrilling mix of epic battles, emotional depth, and bold storytelling that could redefine Superman’s cinematic journey for years to come.
