McComb shared a personal photo of herself with Van Der Beek taken on her 21st birthday, years before the launch of Dawson’s Creek. Reflecting on their shared history, she wrote, “This is how I will always see James – innocent, kind and pure of heart. What a journey we shared over the years. I sit here in immense gratitude for the special connection, friendship and love that James and I shared that has endured through decades.”
She added that she would always hold dear the final loving words they exchanged and remembered him as a “beautiful soul filled with light, humour, depth, sensitivity, and a strong love of God.”
James Van Der Beek Dies at 48
Van Der Beek’s death was confirmed on Wednesday, 11 February, after a long battle with cancer. He had publicly revealed his stage III colorectal cancer diagnosis in November 2024, after being diagnosed in August 2023. A statement posted on Instagram confirmed he passed away peacefully, facing his final days with courage, faith, and grace, while requesting privacy for his grieving family.

McComb and Van Der Beek were married in 2003 before separating in 2009. Their divorce was finalized in 2010, and Van Der Beek married Kimberly later that year.
Reflecting on his life, McComb praised Van Der Beek’s devotion as a father and his love for Kimberly, calling them “true soulmates.” She also commended Kimberly’s grace during his illness and encouraged fans to donate to the GoFundMe campaign supporting Van Der Beek’s family, which has raised over $1 million in less than 24 hours.
