Jason Momoa, best known for his role as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), is set to portray the iconic anti-hero Lobo in the newly rebooted DC Universe (DCU).
This marks a significant shift for the actor as he transitions from playing a beloved hero to embodying a more complex and villainous character. The announcement comes as the Snyderverse DCEU officially concludes, paving the way for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reimagined DCU.
Momoa shared the exciting news on his Instagram account, confirming his casting as Lobo. Known for his superhuman strength, regenerative abilities, and invulnerability, Lobo is a fan-favorite character who first appeared in Omega Men #3 in 1983. Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, Lobo has remained a staple in DC Comics due to his rebellious nature and dark humor.
Momoa’s Lobo will make his debut in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a film adaptation of the acclaimed 2022 comic book series. Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, the movie is slated for release on June 26, 2026. This project is part of a broader slate of films and shows that James Gunn unveiled to establish the new DCU, which includes popular characters like Green Lantern, Hawk Girl, and Krypto.
Before taking on the mantle of Lobo, Momoa achieved monumental success as Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman. His first solo outing, Aquaman (2018), became the highest-grossing film in the Snyderverse, earning over $1 billion globally. However, its sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), underperformed both commercially and critically, coinciding with the DCU’s transition.
The DCU’s re-launch officially begins with Superman: Legacy, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as the titular hero. Scheduled for release on June 11, 2025, the film will lay the groundwork for the franchise’s new direction.
Momoa’s portrayal of Lobo is highly anticipated, as the actor’s charisma and larger-than-life persona align perfectly with the character’s rugged and irreverent demeanor. Fans are eager to see how this iconic anti-hero will be brought to life in the evolving DCU.
