Actress says losing a role on The West Wing was her biggest professional rejection before landing the part of Sydney Bristow

Jennifer Garner has opened up about a major career rejection that came shortly before she landed the role that turned her into a television star.

During an August 25 episode of Aspire with Emma Grede, Garner recalled auditioning for Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed political drama The West Wing. The actress said she desperately wanted the role and was deeply disappointed when she was not selected.

Garner travelled alone to Palm Springs after receiving the rejection, where she spent several days coming to terms with losing a role on a series she greatly admired.

She described the period as a time of “mourning” over the opportunity she had missed.

However, her disappointment did not last long.

“Two weeks later, Alias came to me,” Garner said, reflecting on how quickly her career trajectory changed following the rejection.

Garner lost ‘The West Wing’ role to Emily Procter

Garner had previously revealed that she auditioned for the role of Ainsley Hayes on The West Wing, which ultimately went to Emily Procter.

In a 2026 interview with Flaunt, Garner described losing the part as the biggest professional rejection of her career and said she had been particularly attracted to Sorkin’s writing.

Instead, Garner was cast as Sydney Bristow in J.J. Abrams’ spy thriller Alias.

The ABC series premiered in September 2001 and ran for five seasons before concluding in 2006.

‘Alias’ becomes career breakthrough

The role proved to be a major breakthrough for Garner.

Her performance earned her four consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series from 2002 to 2005, firmly establishing her as one of television’s leading performers.

The success of Alias also opened the door to a broader film career for Garner, who went on to become a prominent figure in both television and Hollywood cinema.

Looking back on the experience, Garner said the rejection ultimately changed the way she approaches setbacks in her career.

“Rejection is God’s protection,” she said during her conversation with Grede.

Garner still has emotional connection to ‘Alias’

Garner has maintained a strong emotional connection to Alias over the years.

The actress previously revealed that she has never watched the show’s finale because she finds the death of Victor Garber’s character, Jack Bristow, too difficult to revisit.

What initially felt like one of the biggest disappointments of Garner’s career ultimately became a turning point, leading her to the role that defined a major chapter of her professional life.

Her experience has since become an example of how an apparently career-ending rejection can unexpectedly create an opportunity that proves far more significant.
