Jennifer Lopez opens up about being misunderstood in Hollywood

Jennifer Lopez recently spoke candidly about feeling “misunderstood” in Hollywood during an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning host Lee Cowan.

The 56-year-old multi-hyphenate reflected on her career and her long-awaited first movie musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman, a project Lopez describes as something she has been dreaming about her “whole” life.

Lopez revealed that early in her career, people in the industry often tried to limit her to music and dance, overlooking her talent as an actress. “People, when they see you first as one thing, it’s hard for them to see you as something else. You just have to show them. You can’t let that discourage you,” Lopez explained.

When asked if she struggled to be taken seriously, Lopez laughed and admitted, “At first? At first — and maybe always.” She added that she has often felt like the underdog in Hollywood, emphasizing, “A little bit. Or maybe it’s just me in my own head. I’ve always felt a bit misunderstood.”

Lopez also shared her perspective on public scrutiny, acknowledging that while people may not fully understand her, she focuses on staying grounded and growing. “But I stay steady. That’s the most important thing, I think. I don’t change. I grow, but I don’t change,” Lopez said.

The Marry Me actress concluded by admitting that she doesn’t have a clear answer to why she hasn’t always been taken seriously, simply stating with humility, “I don’t know.” Despite these challenges, Lopez’s dedication and resilience continue to shine, inspiring both her fans and fellow artists.
