Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer has sparked excitement among fans by hinting at Johnny Depp’s possible return as Captain Jack Sparrow in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bruckheimer revealed that he has spoken to Depp about reprising his iconic role. While nothing is confirmed yet, the producer suggested that Depp’s decision will depend on the quality of the script.
“If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it,” Bruckheimer said. “It’s all about what’s on the page.”
The project is still in development, with the screenplay currently being refined.
“We are still working on a screenplay,” Bruckheimer noted. “We want to make it. We just have to get the right screenplay… we’re close.”
The new installment is expected to be a soft reboot of the franchise, blending new characters with familiar faces. It will follow the events of the 2017 film Dead Men Tell No Tales, which was the last Pirates adventure to feature Depp as the eccentric Jack Sparrow.
Depp’s potential comeback is particularly noteworthy given his highly publicized split from Disney in the aftermath of a 2018 op-ed written by his ex-wife, Amber Heard.
Adding to the anticipation, Orlando Bloom has also hinted that he may reprise his role as Will Turner. Earlier in June, Bruckheimer confirmed that “some” original cast members will return alongside fresh faces, promising a “new take” on the swashbuckling saga.
“Not all new actors,” Bruckheimer teased. “We’ll have some back… I’m not going to tell you which ones.”
Meanwhile, Depp is gradually stepping back into the limelight, currently preparing to portray the character of Hyde in an upcoming graphic novel adaptation, with Ridley Scott involved in the project.
If confirmed, Depp’s return as Jack Sparrow could reignite the franchise’s magic, potentially drawing both long-time fans and new audiences to the next high-seas adventure.
