Joaquin Phoenix’s Unforgettable Singing Moment with Lady Gaga

Joaquin Phoenix had an unforgettable experience singing in front of Lady Gaga on the set of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the highly anticipated sequel to the original Joker film.

Phoenix, reprising his role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, recalled the moment vividly, particularly because Lady Gaga, a Grammy-winning singer, plays Lee/Harley Quinn in the film.

In an interview, Phoenix humorously recounted, “I do seem to remember her spitting up coffee the first time I sang, so that felt good, that was exciting and made me feel confident.” Despite this initial reaction, Phoenix and Gaga later collaborated to create a unique musical dynamic between their characters in the film.

“Gaga was always very encouraging of just, ‘Go with what you feel, it’s fine’,” Joaquin Phoenix said. “For somebody who’s not a performer in that way, it can be… uncomfortable to do that, but also very exciting.” This encouragement helped Phoenix embrace the musical aspects of his character, despite not being a professional singer.

Joaquin Phoenix also discussed the significance of music to his character, Arthur Fleck. Director Todd Phillips had previously noted that Fleck “has music in him,” a theme carried into the sequel. “It was important to protect that with poor phrasing and occasional bum notes,” Phoenix added.

“Arthur grew up hearing his mother play these songs on the radio. He’s not a singer, and he shouldn’t sound like a professional singer. He should sound like somebody that’s taking a shower and just bursts out into song.”

“Joker: Folie à Deux,” set to release on October 4, follows Arthur Fleck, a struggling comedian who finds love in an unexpected place: Arkham State Hospital, where he meets Harley Quinn. Upon his release, the two embark on a passionate yet ill-fated romance, leading to a tragic adventure.

This blend of drama and musical elements, combined with the unique dynamic between Phoenix and Gaga, makes “Joker: Folie à Deux” one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year. Fans are excited to see how this unconventional musical sequel unfolds on the big screen.
