Karachi, September 23, 2025 – The Board of Directors of K-Electric has officially decided to decommission two of its older gas-based power plants, the Korangi Town Gas Turbine Power Station (KTGTPS) and the SITE Gas Turbine Power Station (SGTPS).
The company will now approach NEPRA to seek regulatory approval through a proposed license modification filing.
In a material disclosure to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), K-Electric explained that both plants were added to its generation portfolio in 2009 under an Implementation Agreement signed with the Government of Pakistan and later amended. The plants included 32 engines with a combined gross ISO capacity of over 3,000 MW, supported by government commitments for local gas supply. Steam turbines were later installed in 2016 to improve efficiency.
Initially, these power plants received adequate local gas for smooth operations, but declining reserves and low gas pressure have increasingly hindered performance. Although the plants shifted to RLNG supplies in 2018 on the directives of the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE), consistent gas availability remained a challenge.
To ensure continued reliability, K-Electric has already invested in modern infrastructure. This includes the commissioning of the 900 MW Bin Qasim Power Station III (BQPS-III) and an expansion of interconnection capacity with the National Grid, now exceeding 2,000 MW. Agreements have been signed with CPPA-G and the National Grid Company to secure long-term supply. Company officials assured that the retirement of KTGTPS and SGTPS will not disrupt electricity supply, as K-Electric has diversified its generation and strengthened its grid integration to meet rising demand.
