KARACHI, May 3, 2026 – In a significant move to provide relief to citizens, K-Electric (KE) has announced an immediate pause on all scheduled maintenance shutdowns. The decision comes after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a severe heatwave alert for the metropolis, with temperatures expected to feel like over 45°C.
KE Pauses Maintenance and Economic Load Shedding
To manage the surging demand during this extreme weather event, K-Electric is coordinating closely with its fuel and power suppliers. The utility provider has confirmed two major relief measures for the duration of the heatwave:

1. Suspension of Preventive Maintenance: All planned shutdowns for grid improvements or repairs are on hold to keep the city powered.
2. Pause on Economic Load Shedding: As the “apparent temperature” crosses the 45°C threshold, KE will suspend economic-based load management to ensure maximum comfort for residents.
“As power demand escalates, KE is ready and committed to ensuring a sustainable supply of electricity to Karachi,” stated Imran Rana, K-Electric Spokesperson. “Our field teams remain on alert to ensure the swiftest possible restoration of any localized faults.”
Safety Guidelines: Navigating “Peak Heat Hours”
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has advised all civic agencies to take remedial actions to minimize heatstroke risks. K-Electric echoes these concerns, urging Karachiites to follow strict Heatwave SOPs:
• Avoid Peak Hours: Stay indoors between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
• Limit Exertion: Avoid strenuous physical activities or unnecessary excursions during the day.
• Stay Hydrated: Ensure constant water intake and stay in shaded or cooled environments.
Collaborative Efforts for City Resilience
The power utility has emphasized that it is maintaining constant communication with all provincial and civic agencies to navigate the crisis.
“KE remains in contact with all civic agencies and will cooperate to the best of its ability,” Rana added. “Let this be a time when all public utilities stand together and represent Karachi’s resilience.”
Residents are encouraged to report any emergency faults via the KE Live App, social media channels, or the 118 helpline, though they are reminded to remain patient as field teams operate under extreme weather conditions.
