New Zealand’s cricket captain, Kane Williamson, is set to prove his fitness ahead of a possible appearance in the fourth ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, scheduled in India later this year.

Following a knee injury sustained during an IPL match in March, the 33-year-old player has shown promising signs of recovery, positioning himself to lead his team in the upcoming 50-over tournament.

Williamson, a pivotal presence in New Zealand’s lineup, is determined to secure his spot among the 15-player roster for the forthcoming six-week World Cup, commencing on October 05.

Despite the setback from his injury, he has resumed batting practice and is actively participating in net sessions, all in preparation for a crucial white-ball series against England.

The deadline for teams to present their preliminary squads to the ICC is September 5, followed by the final squad submissions by September 28.

Any subsequent alterations to the squad necessitate approval from the ICC. While Williamson’s rehabilitation progresses as planned, New Zealand’s coach, Gary Stead, has highlighted that certain key milestones must be met by the captain to be eligible for selection. Stead reaffirmed the team’s full commitment to allowing Williamson the necessary time to recuperate fully.

With three prior World Cup campaigns under his belt, Williamson’s standout performance in the most recent edition saw him accumulate an impressive 578 runs, boasting an average of 82.57. His seasoned experience and valuable contributions on the grand stage play a vital role in New Zealand’s ambitions to clinch the championship title in 2023.

New Zealand’s journey in the World Cup will commence with a highly anticipated showdown against England on October 5, reminiscent of their thrilling encounter in the 2019 final.
