Rapper and producer Kanye West is facing renewed international controversy as his upcoming concert in Italy comes under growing pressure for cancellation following past antisemitic remarks.
The planned performance, part of the Hellwat Festival in Reggio Emilia, is scheduled for July 18 at the RCF Arena, a venue capable of hosting more than 100,000 people. If it goes ahead, the show could become one of the largest live performances of West’s career in Europe.
However, opposition is mounting across political and civil society groups in Italy. Jewish organisations and anti-fascist activists have publicly called for the concert to be cancelled, citing concerns over the rapper’s previous statements that have triggered widespread criticism and led to the cancellation of several of his shows in other countries.
The debate has also reached political circles in Italy and the European Union. Italian lawmaker and European Parliament Vice President Pina Picierno told La Gazzetta di Reggio that Italy should follow the example of other countries that have restricted West’s appearances.
“The United Kingdom denied the visa. France effectively prevented the Marseille concert… Italy, meanwhile, is just staying idle with 68,000 tickets sold, as if nothing had happened,” she said.
Despite the backlash, West has not indicated any intention to withdraw from his scheduled appearances. Organisers of the Hellwat Festival have not yet confirmed whether the concert will proceed or face changes.
The controversy comes as West is also expected to perform in several other international markets, including India, Portugal, Turkey, Spain, and the Netherlands, as part of a broader global tour.
The situation remains fluid, with Italian authorities yet to announce any formal decision regarding the event’s status.
