Karachi Braces for 9°C Cold Spell

Karachi, December 16, 2024 – Karachi is set to experience chilly weather with temperatures dropping to as low as 9°C on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. This marks a significant dip as cold weather continues to grip Sindh and other parts of the country.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast that Karachi’s temperature will range between 9°C and 11°C on Tuesday. The city, known for its typically moderate winters, is bracing for one of its coldest days this season.

Sindh’s Weather Outlook

The PMD stated that Sindh would remain under the influence of cold and dry weather, with shallow fog likely in the morning hours in areas such as Sukkur, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Khairpur, and surrounding regions. These conditions are expected to impact visibility in the affected areas, particularly for early commuters.

Synoptic Situation

The current weather pattern is being influenced by continental air prevailing over most parts of the country, coupled with a shallow westerly wave passing over the upper regions of Pakistan.

Weather Conditions on Monday

On Monday, the majority of the country experienced cold and dry weather. Hilly areas, however, reported very cold and partly cloudy to cloudy conditions.

Forecast for Tuesday

The PMD predicts that Tuesday will see similar weather conditions, with most parts of Pakistan experiencing cold and dry weather. Hilly areas are expected to remain very cold with partly cloudy to cloudy skies. Shallow to moderate fog is anticipated in patches across northeastern and southern Punjab, as well as upper Sindh, during the early morning hours.

Past 24 Hours Overview

Over the past 24 hours, cold and dry weather dominated most regions, with hilly areas experiencing very cold and partly cloudy conditions. Shallow fog was observed in central and southern Punjab, slightly affecting visibility.

The lowest minimum temperatures recorded on Monday included -9°C in Leh, -7°C in Skardu, -6°C in Gilgit and Astore, -5°C in Bagrote and Hunza, and -4°C in Kalam.

Karachi residents are advised to prepare for the colder weather ahead, as temperatures continue to drop across Sindh and the rest of the country.
