Karachi, April 29, 2026 — Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has declared a heatwave emergency across the city as authorities brace for severe weather conditions, following directives from Mayor Murtaza Wahab.
The emergency response includes immediate steps to strengthen healthcare readiness and protect vulnerable populations from extreme heat.
Special Heatwave Wards Established
Under the emergency plan, all hospitals operating under the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation have been directed to establish dedicated heatwave wards.
Officials have been instructed to ensure timely and effective treatment for heatstroke and dehydration cases, particularly among high-risk groups such as the old-age, children, and outdoor workers.
Ensuring Medical Preparedness
The mayor has directed hospital administrations to maintain uninterrupted electricity supply and fully functional cooling systems, including fans and air conditioners, in all designated wards.
Hospitals are also required to stock essential medicines, intravenous (IV) fluids, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and other emergency supplies to handle a potential surge in patients.
Round-the-Clock Medical Staff Deployment
To ensure efficient emergency response, trained doctors and paramedical staff will be deployed on a 24/7 basis. Authorities have also been instructed to implement effective triage systems for rapid patient assessment and treatment.
Public Safety Measures and Awareness
In addition to hospital preparedness, the administration has emphasized the availability of clean drinking water for patients and attendants.
Hospitals have also been directed to conduct awareness campaigns on heatwave precautions, including hydration, avoiding direct sunlight, and recognizing early symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
Daily Monitoring and Reporting
Mayor Murtaza Wahab has termed the situation highly urgent and instructed officials to submit daily reports to monitor the effectiveness of emergency measures and ensure timely healthcare delivery.
