The Karachi Interbank Offered Rate (KIBOR) is Pakistan’s benchmark interest rate for unsecured lending among commercial banks and serves as a reference for pricing a broad range of financial products, including corporate loans, trade finance, and other floating-rate facilities.
The benchmark reflects prevailing liquidity conditions in the banking system and market expectations regarding interest rates. Financial institutions, businesses, and investors closely monitor KIBOR because changes in the benchmark directly influence financing costs, investment decisions, and credit availability. Higher KIBOR levels generally increase borrowing costs for businesses and consumers, while lower rates can support lending and economic activity.
The benchmark also provides valuable insight into the State Bank of Pakistan’s monetary policy stance, inflation expectations, and overall financial market conditions. Analysts use KIBOR trends to evaluate liquidity, assess credit demand, and anticipate future movements in interest rates across Pakistan’s banking and financial sectors.
It remains a widely followed indicator for policymakers, economists, and market participants nationwide.
