Karachi rains force closure of schools, colleges on August 21

Rain Karachi

Karachi, August 20, 2025 – Continuous heavy monsoon rains have prompted the Sindh government to extend the closure of educational institutions, including schools and colleges, for another day on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

The decision was made to ensure student safety as parts of Karachi remain inundated.

The monsoon spell that began on August 19 had already led to a shutdown of schools and colleges on August 20. However, persistent downpours and waterlogging across major areas of Karachi forced the authorities to prolong the closure for an additional day.

According to the Sindh Education Department, all public and private schools and colleges in the city will remain closed on Thursday. Although power restoration has improved and several roads have been cleared, a late-night spell of rain accompanied by gusty winds again disrupted recovery efforts across Karachi, delaying a return to normal life.

Earlier, Mayor Murtaza Wahab had declared a rain emergency following Tuesday’s heavy downpour, which submerged key roads and low-lying neighborhoods. Government notifications from the College Education Department and the School Education & Literacy Department have confirmed that the closure applies to all institutions under their control.

Authorities have urged parents and students to stay updated through official announcements, stressing that schools will only reopen once weather conditions improve and safety risks subside.
