Karachi, August 29, 2024 – In anticipation of severe weather, authorities in Karachi have announced the closure of all public and private schools on Friday, August 30, 2024.
The decision comes as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued warnings about the impending heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected to hit the city in the coming days.
According to the PMD, a strong monsoon system is currently developing near Tharparkar and India’s Rann of Kutch. This system is anticipated to move into Karachi, Hyderabad, and other districts, bringing torrential rains and thunderstorms. Meteorologists predict that Karachi could receive between 150 and 200 millimeters of rainfall over the next three days. This amount of rain poses a significant risk of urban flooding, especially in low-lying areas and neighborhoods prone to drainage issues.
Anjum Nazir Zaighum, a meteorologist with the PMD, explained that a powerful weather system is currently located about 270 kilometers northeast of Karachi. As it moves towards the Arabian Sea, there is a possibility it could intensify into a cyclone storm. “Such weather systems can bring prolonged periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds, typically lasting three to four days in the Arabian Sea,” Zaighum said. “We are closely monitoring the situation to provide timely updates and necessary advisories to the public.”
In response to the severe weather warning, the government has taken preemptive measures to ensure the safety of students and school staff. Authorities have directed school administrations in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sajawal, Badin, Tandwalayar, and Sanghar to suspend classes on Friday as a precautionary measure against potential flooding and hazardous weather conditions. The PDMA has also mobilized emergency response teams and coordinated with local government departments to prepare for any emergencies that may arise due to the heavy rains.
Residents of Karachi are urged to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols during the storm. The PDMA has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel, secure loose objects around their homes, and stay indoors as much as possible. Additionally, citizens are encouraged to keep emergency supplies on hand, such as food, water, and first-aid kits, in case of power outages or flooding.
As the city braces for the approaching storm, authorities have emphasized the importance of staying informed through official channels for the latest weather updates and advisories. The Karachi administration is committed to ensuring public safety and minimizing disruptions caused by the expected heavy rainfall and potential cyclone.
