Karachi, January 18, 2025 – Karachi is bracing for a significant drop in temperatures in the coming days as the cold wave intensifies in Quetta, where temperatures have already plunged to freezing levels.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that Quetta recorded a low of -1°C as the cold wave gripped Balochistan. Karachi’s winter chill is directly influenced by weather conditions in Quetta and surrounding areas of the province. With temperatures continuing to drop in Quetta, Karachi is expected to experience colder weather soon.
According to the PMD, moderate to heavy rain accompanied by windstorms and snowfall over hills is expected in several districts of Balochistan, including Quetta, Ziarat, Kalat, and Khuzdar. Karachi, being on the receiving end of these weather systems, is likely to feel the ripple effects in the form of a significant temperature drop.
On Sunday, January 19, 2025, the cold wave is forecast to intensify as rain and snowfall persist in areas like Quetta, Chaman, and Ziarat. The PMD has warned of potential flash floods in districts such as Chagai, Nushki, and Pishin, and advised travelers to exercise caution in these regions. Snowfall in Quetta and surrounding hilly areas could also lead to road closures and slippery conditions.
Synoptic Situation and National Forecast
A westerly wave is currently affecting western parts of the country and is expected to reach upper areas by tonight. While Karachi braces for cooler conditions, most parts of the country will experience cold and dry weather, with rain and snow likely in northern Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and Kashmir.
Saturday’s forecast predicts very cold and partly cloudy weather in hilly areas, with dense fog likely to persist in upper Sindh, including Karachi, and Punjab. On Sunday, conditions are expected to remain cold, with rain and snowfall continuing in northwestern regions.
Lowest Temperatures Recorded
In the past 24 hours, extremely cold conditions prevailed across the country. Quetta saw freezing temperatures, while Karachi experienced a milder chill. The coldest temperatures were recorded in Leh (-11°C), Skardu (-9°C), and Kalat (-6°C).
As Karachians prepare for colder days ahead, the city remains influenced by the freezing conditions in Quetta, emphasizing the close connection between the two regions’ weather systems.
