Karachi to experience light rain during Muharram holidays

Pakistan Weather

Karachi, July 5, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast light rain for Karachi during the upcoming Muharram holidays, offering potential relief from the persistent heat and humidity gripping the city.

According to the PMD’s weather update for Saturday, July 5, and Sunday, July 6, Karachi and other parts of coastal Sindh may receive light rain or drizzle at isolated locations. The overall weather is expected to remain mainly hot and very humid across most districts of Sindh, including Karachi. However, areas such as Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mithi, Sanghar, Khairpur, and Mirpur Khas may witness rain-wind/thundershowers. Dadu has also been included in Sunday’s forecast for possible scattered showers.

For residents of Karachi, the forecast of light rain brings hope of brief respite amid oppressive humidity. The city has been sweltering under high temperatures, with maximum readings hovering around 35–38°C. While the rain forecast is not widespread or heavy, even isolated showers could cool the atmosphere and reduce discomfort during the holidays.

Nationally, the PMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall from July 6 to July 8, which may result in flash floods in local streams and nullahs across several northern regions. Particularly vulnerable areas include Murree, Galliyat, Manshera, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Swat, and parts of Balochistan. The weather department has also issued an alert for potential urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Peshawar due to intense downpours.

The synoptic situation indicates that weak moist currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are currently entering upper and central Pakistan and are expected to intensify by Saturday night. Additionally, a westerly wave is anticipated to affect the upper parts of the country from Saturday evening onward.

In the last 24 hours, hot and humid conditions dominated most parts of the country, though isolated rain and thunderstorms were recorded in Upper Punjab, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Southeastern Sindh. Karachi, however, remained dry, though the upcoming system may change that.

With Karachi expected to receive light rain, residents are advised to remain cautious, especially while traveling during the holidays, and keep an eye on further updates from the PMD.
