Katy Perry, whose latest album, 143, received mixed reactions from fans, recently shared her approach to dealing with negative reviews.
The 40-year-old singer and songwriter revealed that she consciously avoids reading critiques, regardless of whether they are positive or negative.
In an exclusive interview with People Magazine on Saturday, February 1st, Perry explained her philosophy, stating, “You shouldn’t read it when it’s good. You shouldn’t read it when it’s bad.”
The Teenage Dream hitmaker further elaborated on how a piece of advice from her therapist reshaped her mindset. “My therapist said something that really changed my life. What anybody thinks about you is none of your business. It’s what you think about yourself.” She emphasized that her self-worth is not dictated by external opinions but rather by her own perception of her work and identity.
Discussing her latest album, Perry asserted that despite the criticism, 143 holds deep personal significance. “I created this album out of a real shift in my life when I became a mother, and I really tapped into that feminine divine energy. The messages on it are celebratory. They’re about love,” she expressed, highlighting the album’s emotional depth.
The Roar singer reflected on the transformative period in her life that inspired the record, noting that becoming a mother brought a profound change in her perspective. “I have an incredible identity that I’ve been able to create since COVID, when a lot changed for so much. So the album really just celebrates love and this unconditional love that I have been looking for my whole life and never really knew it existed. That was a cliché, and it’s actually true.”
Despite the reception of 143, Perry remains undeterred, focusing on personal growth and the joy her music brings to her life. Fans can look forward to seeing her perform live, as she prepares to kickstart the U.S. leg of her Lifetimes Tour on May 7th. The upcoming tour is expected to showcase both her new material and past chart-topping hits, reinforcing her enduring presence in the music industry.
