Hollywood star to lead voice cast in upcoming Japanese animated action film
Keanu Reeves is set to star as the lead voice actor in Hidari, an upcoming Japanese stop-motion action movie inspired by samurai storytelling and traditional woodworking craftsmanship.
The film is directed by Masashi Kawamura and expands on a short animated concept that gained widespread attention online after its release on YouTube in 2023.
The original short attracted nearly five million views and quickly became one of the most discussed stop-motion animation projects among global audiences.
Hidari inspired by legendary craftsman
The story draws inspiration from Jingoro Hidari, a legendary craftsman from Japan’s Edo period known for his woodworking mastery.
In the film’s reimagined storyline, the character suffers betrayal by powerful enemies, losing his loved ones and his right arm before embarking on a revenge-driven journey.
Using advanced woodworking techniques, Hidari creates mechanical prosthetic arms and sets out alongside a mysterious companion known as the “Sleeping Cat.”
The project combines traditional Japanese themes with stylized stop-motion animation and action storytelling.
Keanu Reeves praises ambitious project
Reeves said he was impressed by the creative vision behind the film and believes the project could offer audiences a unique cinematic experience.
According to the actor, the production team has transformed the original proof-of-concept into a visually ambitious and emotionally engaging feature film.
Director Kawamura also welcomed Reeves’ involvement, describing the collaboration as a major step forward for the project and noting that the actor is contributing beyond voice performance to help shape the broader creative universe of the film.
The movie is being produced by Noriko Matsumoto, whose studio previously worked on Netflix animated productions including Rilakkuma and Kaoru.
The addition of Reeves is expected to significantly boost international interest in the upcoming film as anticipation continues to grow around the project.
