Karachi, March 31, 2026 – The Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), operated by Hutchison Ports, has successfully completed the biometric registration of more than 15,000 truck drivers, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s port digitization efforts.
This achievement makes KICT the first container terminal in the country to implement a comprehensive digital verification system aimed at improving operational efficiency, safety, and transparency across container handling processes. The system was soft launched on January 1, 2026, and after successfully onboarding the trucking community, it is scheduled to go fully live on April 1, 2026.
Digital Transformation at the Port
The biometric verification platform enables quick and accurate identification of truck drivers entering the terminal. This reduces manual checks, speeds up gate processing, and ensures smoother coordination of container movements. As a result, terminal operations are becoming more efficient, with reduced waiting times and improved vehicle flow.
The introduction of this system has also helped KICT establish a verified driver network, allowing better communication, improved operational planning, and enhanced coordination with logistics partners. The initiative contributes to a more structured and professional environment for the trucking community, which plays a critical role in Pakistan’s supply chain and trade ecosystem.
Enhanced Safety and Reduced Congestion
One of the key outcomes of the biometric system is improved safety management within the terminal. According to KICT, pedestrian movement in operational areas has decreased by approximately 90%, significantly reducing the risk of accidents and enhancing workplace safety for drivers, staff, and equipment operators.
The digital platform also enables monitoring of driver behavior, encouraging safer driving practices and allowing the terminal to introduce targeted awareness programs. This data-driven approach helps maintain high safety standards and supports continuous operational improvements.
Incentives and Community Engagement
To encourage adoption and recognize the trucking community’s cooperation, KICT has introduced a reward and recognition program for registered drivers. More than 12,000 entries have already been received, and three motorbikes will be awarded through a lucky draw as part of the initiative.
Leadership Perspective
Commenting on the development, Navaid Qureshi, Chief Executive Officer of KICT, emphasized the importance of technology in modern port operations. He stated that digitizing driver verification enhances efficiency, transparency, and safety while enabling better coordination across the terminal.
Driving Innovation in Pakistan’s Logistics Sector
This initiative reflects KICT’s continued commitment to innovation, sustainable operations, and digital transformation. By investing in advanced technology, the terminal is strengthening its role in supporting Pakistan’s trade flows and improving the overall logistics infrastructure.
The biometric system represents a significant step forward in modernizing port operations in Pakistan, aligning with global best practices and paving the way for smarter, safer, and more efficient container handling systems.
