Kim Kardashian’s new reality series Team Moms: Baseball has sparked controversy before its first episode has even aired, with critics accusing the programme of highlighting — and potentially encouraging — the increasingly intense culture surrounding youth sports.
The Paramount+ series, which premieres on September 24, follows families connected to Legendary Preps Academy in Scottsdale, Arizona, where ambitious parents appear just as determined as their children to pursue baseball success.
Kardashian serves as an executive producer alongside Natalie Ento. The trailer suggests that tensions among parents could provide as much drama as the action on the baseball field, featuring arguments, parental pressure, drinking and ambitious hopes of producing future baseball stars.
“These families are passionate, competitive, and completely all in when it comes to their kids,” Kardashian and Ento said. “Sometimes what happens in the stands is just as intense as what happens on the field.”
However, the trailer has already divided viewers, with some criticising the decision to turn the often heated world of youth baseball into reality television.
Yahoo Sports’ Kendall Baker delivered one of the harshest assessments, arguing that he could not think of a better representation of what is wrong with youth sports than Kardashian turning youth baseball parents into reality TV.
Another critic described the programme as potentially “the worst thing” to happen to an already intense youth sports environment, while another viewer bluntly declared that youth sports in the United States were “cooked”.
Concerns over parental pressure
Much of the criticism centres on concerns that competitive youth sports have become dominated by parental pressure, excessive ambition and disputes among adults, with children sometimes caught in the middle.
Critics fear that a reality series focused on these dynamics could normalise or amplify behaviour that has already become a source of concern within youth sports communities.
The trailer, however, appears to deliberately lean into the tension between parents, players and competition, potentially making the adults’ behaviour as central to the programme as the young athletes themselves.
Supporters see a different side
Despite the backlash, the series also has supporters who believe its controversial premise could make it more revealing than damaging.
Some viewers suggested that parents mocking the programme might recognise elements of their own behaviour in the families featured on screen.
“The best part of this show, and all the social media comments that it will engender, will be the people that make fun of it without realising they could easily be starring in it,” one viewer wrote.
That reaction points to a potentially uncomfortable aspect of Team Moms: Baseball. Rather than simply portraying extreme examples of sports parents, the programme could prompt viewers to examine how far their own competitive behaviour might go when their children are involved.
