Record cargo volume underscores improved port efficiency and boosts Pakistan’s ambitions to become a regional maritime and logistics hub
KARACHI: The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has achieved the highest annual cargo handling volume in its 138-year history, marking a landmark achievement for Pakistan’s maritime sector and reinforcing the country’s position as a key regional trade gateway.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the milestone on Sunday, stating that KPT had surpassed its previous all-time cargo handling record of 54.685 million tonnes during the current fiscal year.
The minister described the achievement as a significant milestone for Pakistan’s ports sector, attributing the record performance to enhanced operational efficiency, improved management practices and expanded cargo handling capacity at the country’s busiest seaport.
He said the accomplishment reflects the success of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs’ ongoing reform agenda, which aims to modernise port operations, facilitate trade and strengthen Pakistan’s maritime economy.
“The record cargo handling volume is a testament to the professionalism, dedication and coordinated efforts of KPT and all stakeholders involved in port operations,” the minister said.
Junaid Chaudhry congratulated KPT Chairman Rear Admiral (R) Shahid Ahmed, officers, employees and all stakeholders for their collective efforts in achieving the historic milestone.
He noted that the record was the result of effective planning, operational improvements and close coordination among all parties involved in port management and logistics.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upgrading Pakistan’s port infrastructure, expanding cargo handling capacity and aligning maritime operations with international standards to improve competitiveness.
He added that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs is pursuing a comprehensive reform programme aimed at enhancing efficiency, facilitating domestic and international trade, attracting fresh investment and positioning Pakistan as a regional maritime and logistics hub.
“The government remains committed to transforming Pakistan’s ports into modern, competitive gateways that support economic growth and international trade,” he said.
KPT Chairman Rear Admiral (R) Shahid Ahmed also congratulated the port’s workforce, stating that the achievement reflected the organisation’s professionalism, strategic planning and unwavering commitment to operational excellence.
He expressed confidence that Karachi Port Trust would continue building on its record performance through further efficiency gains, infrastructure development and service improvements to meet the growing demands of international trade.
Industry experts say the record cargo handling volume demonstrates the resilience of Pakistan’s maritime sector despite global trade challenges. Higher throughput is expected to improve supply chain efficiency, strengthen investor confidence and support the country’s broader economic growth objectives by facilitating increased imports, exports and regional transit trade.
