Karachi Tax Bar

The Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) addressed significant challenges in filing income tax returns during a meeting with Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq, Member, Inland Revenue – Operations, on Saturday. The meeting aimed to shed light on the difficulties encountered by taxpayers and tax consultants while using the online tax filing system.

Led by its president, Zeeshan Merchant, the KTBA delegation emphasized the technical and procedural obstacles faced on the Integrated Revenue System (IRS). Merchant explained that these issues were creating inefficiencies for taxpayers and consultants alike, hampering timely compliance with tax regulations.

The KTBA also raised concerns about the increasing complexity of tax processes, which necessitates urgent system improvements. The association stressed that smooth functionality of the IRS is vital to achieve broader compliance and meet revenue targets.

In response, Dr. Ashfaq assured the KTBA of prioritizing the resolution of the issues. He acknowledged the challenges highlighted and reiterated his commitment to ensuring a more user-friendly and efficient tax filing system. Dr. Ashfaq also emphasized the importance of collaboration with the KTBA, noting that the association’s insights and feedback are crucial in overcoming systemic bottlenecks.

The Member further sought the KTBA’s assistance in increasing the number of tax return filings, urging the bar to support the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in achieving its targets. He highlighted that the active participation of tax professionals and their guidance to taxpayers can play a significant role in expanding the tax base.

Also in attendance was Abdul Qadir Memon, Patron of the Pakistan Tax Bar Association (PTBA), who emphasized the importance of resolving these issues promptly to build trust among taxpayers. Both the KTBA and PTBA committed to working closely with tax authorities to streamline processes and improve compliance rates.

The KTBA’s proactive approach in voicing concerns underscores its vital role in bridging the gap between taxpayers and the tax administration. With continued cooperation, the association hopes to ensure a more transparent and efficient taxation environment in Pakistan.
