Lady Gaga Shines as Harley Quinn in ‘Joker’ Sequel

Lady Gaga was not the initial choice for the role of Harley Quinn in the highly anticipated sequel to Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” but her performance has already garnered high praise.

During a conversation at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, casting director Francine Maisler shared her thoughts on Gaga’s portrayal, which has left many, including herself, amazed.

“She’s so good in it, you guys. She’s going to blow your mind,” Maisler said, as reported by IndieWire. “I didn’t suggest Lady Gaga. It wasn’t my idea. That was Todd Phillips, before me.”

Maisler confessed her initial surprise at the casting decision but was thoroughly impressed after witnessing Gaga’s performance. “But I will tell you, she’s really surprising — and really good. I saw it and I was really surprised,” Maisler, also known for her work on “The Revenant,” enthused.

Reflecting on Gaga’s previous work, Maisler acknowledged the singer-actress’s strong performance in “A Star Is Born,” noting it was within her expected range. “I mean, we all knew what she could do in ‘A Star Is Born,’ but I thought, ‘Oh, well, that’s kind of in her wheelhouse.’ Something she could do and just be real. But this… Man, she’s good,” she added.

Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, is set to star in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” alongside Joaquin Phoenix, who reprises his role as the titular character. The sequel is eagerly awaited, with Gaga’s involvement adding to the excitement.

Maisler further elaborated on her astonishment at Gaga’s ability to match Phoenix’s intense performance. “Joaquin blows your mind, but that she could keep up with him, and be real — and not just wiped off the screen by what that role is and what the performance is — shows she’s good,” she added.

The revelation of Lady Gaga’s unexpected yet exceptional performance has heightened anticipation for “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Fans and critics alike are eager to see how she brings Harley Quinn to life, adding a new dimension to the character and the franchise.
