Lily Collins opened up about her character Emily Cooper’s latest romantic decision in the hit Netflix series Emily in Paris, sharing insights during an interview with PEOPLE Magazine aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.
The 36-year-old actress expressed her approval of Emily’s choice, particularly regarding her brief romance with Italian love interest Marcello. “I loved it,” Collins began, highlighting how each of Emily’s relationships contributes to her personal growth. “I feel like each person Emily’s with teaches her so much about what she needs and doesn’t need, wants and doesn’t want,” she said, emphasizing the realism in her character’s journey.
Collins described Emily’s connection with Marcello as a fairytale-like experience. “And [Emily] really does appreciate, respect and love him as a human. But I think she acknowledged that it wasn’t the life that she wanted and she wasn’t done living the exploration of herself yet,” Collins explained. She added that while the relationship wouldn’t have been bad, it wasn’t the fulfilling path for Emily at that moment in her life.
Praising her character’s courage, Collins concluded, “I really liked that she was brave enough to make that decision. And as painful as it was, it was done with love and respect. And I appreciated the way that they both said goodbye in a sense.”
Fans of Emily in Paris continue to admire Emily’s journey of self-discovery, making her latest romantic choice a defining moment in the series.
