Lyon’s Injury Likely to End Ashes Series Participation

Nathan Lyon

Injured Nathan Lyon is unlikely to play any further part in the Ashes series due to a significant calf strain. The Australian spinner sustained the injury while fielding on Day 2 of the second Ashes Test match at Lord’s.

Lyon had celebrated an incredible milestone in the second match against England, playing his 100th consecutive Test match for Australia. However, it now looks like he will not be adding to that number in this series.

Lyon’s absence will be felt by Australia, especially considering his impressive performance in the first Test. In his absence, Todd Murphy, the other full-time spinner in the traveling squad, could potentially make his Ashes debut.

Murphy is a 22-year-old off-spinner who had a successful series against India earlier this year, taking seven wickets in his debut innings and a total of 14 wickets in the four Test matches.

The Australian team will make a decision regarding Lyon’s replacement after the conclusion of the ongoing Test at Lord’s.

Mitchell Swepson and Matthew Kuhnemann are other leading contenders to replace Lyon in the 18-member squad in the coming Tests.

Additionally, Travis Head, who demonstrated his off-break bowling skills by taking the wickets of Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson during the first session of Day 3, could be relied upon as well.
