Magnitude 4 earthquake jolts Karachi, residents feel tremors

Pakistan Independence Day 76

Karachi: A magnitude 4 earthquake shook Karachi on Friday, prompting residents to rush out of homes and offices as tremors were felt across multiple areas of the city.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located approximately 100 kilometres south of Karachi. Areas reporting the tremors included Landhi, Khurramabad, Malir, and Korangi.

Authorities confirmed that there were no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage, but the event adds to a series of seismic activities experienced in the city in recent months.

Recent Seismic Activity in Karachi

• On March 10, 2026, Karachi experienced a magnitude 3.2 quake, affecting areas including Malir at a depth of 35 kilometres.

• Since June 2025, the metropolis has felt dozens of minor to moderate tremors, highlighting the region’s ongoing seismic activity.

Broader Regional Earthquakes

Earlier this year, on January 19, 2026, a major 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Islamabad at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremors were also felt in Swat (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and Hunza (Gilgit-Baltistan), causing partial damage to more than 100 homes, including wall cracks. Landslides also led to road and pathway closures, notably along sections of the Karakoram Highway.

The US Geological Survey reported a related quake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, located about 50 kilometres north-northwest of Barishal, at a depth of 35 kilometres.

Seismologists continue to monitor the region for aftershocks and minor tremors. Residents are advised to remain alert, follow safety protocols, and report any damage to local authorities. Karachi’s ongoing exposure to minor earthquakes underlines the importance of preparedness in the coastal metropolis.
