Margot Robbie has shared her honest philosophy about filmmaking, revealing that connecting with audiences is always her top priority — even if critics disagree.
Speaking during a promotional interview for Wuthering Heights alongside co-star Jacob Elordi and moderator Joel Edgerton for Vogue Australia, Robbie explained how she approaches her work on set.
“I consider the audience always. I’ve never, ever been on set and thought, ‘What are the critics going to think of this?’” she said. “I’m like, ‘What’s an audience going to feel right now? What’s their emotional response going to be?’”
The Oscar-nominated actress and producer emphasized that movies should primarily serve the people who buy tickets. “I just believe you should make movies for the people who are going to see them. It’s as simple as that,” Robbie added.
Her comments come amid mixed reviews for Wuthering Heights, which has sparked debate among critics and fans alike. Despite the divided reception, Robbie expressed confidence in the film’s creative direction and praised its writer-director, Emerald Fennell, for sharing the same audience-first philosophy.
“I love working with Emerald because she always prioritizes emotional experience over a heady idea,” Robbie said. “She’s incredibly smart and creative, but she’s willing to let go of a cool concept if it means delivering something more exciting and emotionally engaging for the audience.”
Robbie’s perspective highlights her ongoing commitment to storytelling that resonates deeply with viewers, reinforcing her reputation as both a thoughtful performer and a savvy producer in modern cinema.
