Margot Robbie has revealed that landing the lead role in Emerald Fennell’s upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights was an unexpected yet destined moment in her career.

The 35-year-old actress initially joined the project as a producer, long before stepping into the iconic role of Catherine Earnshaw. Speaking during her appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Friday, February 6, the Barbie star explained how the casting decision unfolded organically.

“I wasn’t always going to be in it,” Robbie shared. “I was thrilled to be the producer, but at some point, we were talking about Cathy, and I decided to throw my hat into the ring.”

Despite the spontaneous nature of the decision, Robbie described it as a powerful moment of clarity. She added, “I’ve always wanted to be one of Emerald’s actors, and fortunately, she felt the same way. It worked out wonderfully.”

Fennell’s interpretation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel has sparked widespread debate since the release of its first trailer. Addressing the discussions, Robbie explained that the director aimed to capture the raw emotional impact of the book rather than create a strict retelling.

“Emerald loves the novel and focused on the intense feelings it gave her when she first read it at 14,” Robbie told host Graham Norton. “She channels that emotional experience, making it more of an interpretation than a traditional adaptation.”

Meanwhile, Jacob Elordi, who stars as Heathcliff, admitted his casting also came as a surprise. “I was traveling when Emerald texted me asking if I wanted to play Heathcliff, and I instantly said yes,” he said.

The film is scheduled for worldwide release on Friday, February 13, and is already generating strong anticipation among fans and critics alike.
