Global music icon Mariah Carey may boast decades of chart-topping success, but the superstar insists she does not see herself as a “legend.” In a new Billboard cover story, the 56-year-old singer reflected on her career, philanthropy, and her upcoming recognition as MusiCares’ 2026 Person of the Year.

Despite achieving 19 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and winning five Grammy Awards, Carey said she prefers to stay grounded and focused on her work. “Everybody has their own little meanings for what things they say,” she shared. “But I don’t call myself a legend. I’m just still working, still trying hard.”

The Recording Academy’s philanthropic arm, MusiCares, will honor Carey on January 30, placing her among an elite group of past recipients that includes Dolly Parton, Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, Gloria Estefan and Smokey Robinson.

Praising her impact beyond music, MusiCares executive director Theresa Wolters highlighted Carey’s long-standing commitment to charitable causes, including disaster relief, youth empowerment and initiatives supporting marginalized communities.

Carey has consistently used her global platform to give back. In December 2025, her custom pink “Protect the Dolls” T-shirt, worn during a UK Pride festival performance, raised more than $5,000 through a GLAAD auction to support the transgender community.

“All of us should do what we can to give back something,” Carey told Billboard, emphasizing that philanthropy remains a vital part of her life.

The MusiCares gala will feature tribute performances by Adam Lambert, Billy Porter, Charlie Puth, Foo Fighters, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Kesha, Laufey, Maggie Rogers, Taylor Momsen and Teddy Swims, with Jermaine Dupri set to deliver a special DJ set.
