The lifestyle mogul says her costume was intended to raise awareness about homelessness, not offend anyone, following criticism on social media.

Martha Stewart has responded to criticism over her Halloween costume after facing backlash for dressing up as a homeless person with a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”

The 85-year-old lifestyle mogul said she never intended to offend anyone and explained that her costume was designed to draw attention to the serious issue of homelessness.

In a statement, Stewart said she had spent decades helping people celebrate Halloween through festive recipes, creative crafts and entertaining ideas.

She added that she was distressed to learn that her costume had offended people, stressing that causing upset was never her intention.

Stewart also described homelessness as one of America’s greatest ongoing challenges and said she deeply cared about the issue.

The television personality highlighted her involvement in supporting charities working to address homelessness, adding that she remained committed to making a difference.

Stewart has previously spoken about her enthusiasm for Halloween, describing it as one of her favourite holidays.

In 2024, she revealed that she looked forward to the season every year, enjoying apple picking, selecting pumpkins and decorating her farm and home.

She also recalled being named the “Queen of Halloween” by her editors, explaining that she loved creating imaginative costumes and embracing the festive spirit.

Her latest costume, however, has sparked debate over the portrayal of homelessness and the sensitivity required when addressing serious social issues through Halloween celebrations.
