The lifestyle mogul apologises after facing backlash for her Halloween outfit, while the Today anchor questions why he was dragged into the controversy.

Craig Melvin has confronted Martha Stewart over her controversial Halloween costume after the lifestyle mogul suggested that a chocolate mishap involving the television presenter had influenced her outfit.

During her appearance on Today on Friday, November 6, Stewart addressed the backlash surrounding a Halloween photograph she shared on October 31.

The 85-year-old was pictured wearing ripped clothing, dirt on her face and holding a clipboard displaying the message: “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!”

The photograph sparked criticism on social media, prompting Stewart to delete it and issue an apology.

She later explained that Melvin had accidentally spilled chocolate on the white sweater she had planned to wear, forcing her to choose a last-minute costume.

However, Melvin questioned why he had been dragged into the controversy.

“Why was I dragged into it?” the anchor asked.

Stewart insisted she was not blaming him and had only been joking about the chocolate incident. Melvin clarified that there was “no connection” between the spill and her eventual costume.

Stewart acknowledged the criticism, revealing that her grandson had also described the outfit as “tone deaf”.

“It was just …. And I apologise, because I was not making fun of anybody or making light of the great problems that face our country,” she said.

She further apologised to her followers and the American public, hoping they would forgive her.

Melvin thanked Stewart for addressing the issue and revealed that she would return to Today the following week with Thanksgiving tips.
