Meta Blocks Third-Party AI Chatbots on WhatsApp

WhatsApp is preparing to implement major changes to its terms of service, with a key update targeting the use of non-Meta AI chatbots inside the platform.

Starting January 15, 2026, WhatsApp will officially prohibit all third-party AI bots, a move that directly impacts millions of users who rely on AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and other external large language models (LLMs).

This policy shift means that users will no longer be able to interact with non-Meta AI tools within WhatsApp. Any chatbot not built or approved by Meta will be removed to ensure tighter control over AI experiences and security within the messaging service. The cut-off date also marks the last day WhatsApp Business users can use ChatGPT, Copilot, or any other non-Meta AI chatbot for communication or automation.

The update aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to integrate its own in-house AI systems across its platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. The company aims to streamline user experience by promoting Meta AI as the primary chatbot option across its services.

The transition has already begun, as OpenAI announced its withdrawal from WhatsApp last month, acknowledging that ChatGPT support will end ahead of the policy rollout. Microsoft also confirmed this week that Copilot will no longer function on WhatsApp, signaling compliance with the upcoming restrictions.

There is, however, a limited exception. Businesses that use AI chatbots specifically for customer support on WhatsApp will still be allowed to continue using approved automation tools. While ChatGPT users will have the option to migrate and preserve their WhatsApp chat history before the deadline, Copilot users will not have access to any migration option.

With this shift, Meta is reshaping the AI ecosystem inside WhatsApp, pushing users and businesses toward its native AI solutions. As the 2026 deadline approaches, users relying on external AI tools may need to explore alternative platforms or prepare for a transition to Meta’s own AI offerings.
