MG, a British-born Chinese automaker, has unveiled its ambitious plans to introduce two significant models in 2025: a compact pure electric sedan and a large plug-in hybrid SUV.
These upcoming vehicles will represent a shift toward a “more Chinese” design approach, signaling a departure from the brand’s traditional British aesthetic. This strategic move aligns with MG’s vision to establish itself as a dominant global player in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
One of the standout features of MG’s upcoming lineup is the anticipated incorporation of a semi-solid-state battery, set to debut in one of these models next year.
This advanced technology is expected to significantly improve the range and overall performance of MG’s electrified vehicles, further strengthening its position in the competitive electric vehicle (EV) market.
Currently, MG offers a diverse portfolio of vehicles, including electric hypercars, roadsters, sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs. The company is also preparing to introduce a 7-seater SUV in the Australian market, likely a counterpart to the Roewe RX9, equipped with a 1.5T plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Global Growth Amid Domestic Decline
MG’s global footprint has expanded considerably in recent years, with the company achieving record-breaking sales. Its global sales soared from 298,000 units in 2019 to an impressive 840,000 units in 2023, cementing MG’s status as a top exporter of Chinese-made vehicles.
However, this success comes in contrast to its domestic performance in China, where sales have plummeted. MG’s domestic sales dropped from 159,000 units in 2019 to just 100,000 units in 2023, reflecting growing challenges in its home market.
The decline in domestic sales can be attributed to the intensifying competition in China’s automotive sector, particularly in the new energy vehicle (NEV) segment. Both local automakers and joint ventures have heavily invested in this space, raising the bar for market players like MG.
To counteract these challenges, SAIC, MG’s parent company, has unveiled a “Three-Year Action Plan for the Development of NEVs.” This initiative aims to achieve annual NEV sales of 3.5 million units by 2025, reinforcing MG’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
With its new models and cutting-edge technologies, MG is poised to strengthen its global presence while addressing the dynamic demands of its domestic market.
