New behind-the-scenes images from the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael have revealed the detailed craftsmanship behind recreating the singer’s signature style, offering fans a closer look at the film’s production process.
The biopic, titled Michael, chronicles the life and legacy of Michael Jackson, with his nephew Jaafar Jackson portraying the King of Pop from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his rise as a global superstar.
According to PEOPLE, the newly released exclusive images highlight the production’s focus on authenticity, particularly in recreating Jackson’s iconic fashion moments that defined multiple eras of his career.
Costume designer Marci Rodgers led the meticulous recreation process, including the Jackson 5’s coordinated red vest outfits and Michael Jackson’s legendary Thriller jacket and Bad era wardrobe.
Rodgers said she undertook extensive research to ensure accuracy, immersing herself in Jackson’s life and artistic evolution.
“I started with the music,” Rodgers previously told PEOPLE, adding that she compiled “a research book of over 800 pages” focused on Jackson and his family.
Her approach, she said, was guided by respect and precision across all eras of the singer’s career.
“I was very particular about the weight of the fabric, the sheen of the fabric to replicate what was worn during that era,” Rodgers said, noting the importance of detail under stage lighting and Swarovski crystal work used in the costumes.
She also highlighted the challenge of replicating Jackson’s distinctive red tones, which required careful colour matching to maintain visual authenticity on screen.
The film continues to draw attention as audiences await its broader release. Michael is currently available on digital premium video on demand (PVOD) and is still screening in select cinemas.
The project is part of a growing trend of music biopics revisiting the lives and cultural impact of global pop icons, with a strong emphasis on visual authenticity and archival accuracy.
