Microsoft is preparing to launch a new artificial intelligence feature for OneDrive that aims to simplify one of the most common digital tasks—renaming files. Called Copilot Suggested Rename, the upcoming tool will automatically analyze file content and recommend more descriptive names, helping users keep their cloud storage organized with minimal effort.
The feature has appeared on the Microsoft 365 roadmap and is expected to begin rolling out in June 2026.
Copilot Suggested Rename Uses AI to Organize Files
Many users struggle with poorly named files such as “Document1,” “Scan_04182026,” or “FinalFINALv3.” Over time, these generic labels can make finding important documents difficult and reduce productivity.
Microsoft’s new Copilot Suggested Rename feature addresses this problem by using AI to understand a file’s content and generate relevant naming suggestions. When a user chooses to rename a file, Copilot will review the document and provide three context-aware name options directly within the rename dialog box.
Users can then select their preferred suggestion with a single click, eliminating the need to manually create file names.
Feature Available Immediately After Upload
In addition to the standard rename option, Microsoft is integrating the feature into OneDrive’s upload workflow. After a supported file is uploaded, users will see a post-upload notification that includes AI-generated rename suggestions.
This allows files to be properly labeled immediately after being added to cloud storage, helping users maintain an organized digital workspace from the start.
The streamlined process is expected to save time for both individual users and businesses that manage large volumes of documents.
Wide Support for Popular File Formats
Copilot Suggested Rename will support a broad range of commonly used file formats. These include Microsoft Word (DOCX), Excel (XLSX), and PowerPoint (PPTX) documents, along with PDFs, Markdown files, and image formats.
The extensive compatibility ensures that the feature can be used across most files typically stored in OneDrive, making it valuable for professionals, students, and everyday users alike.
Web Rollout Planned First
Microsoft has confirmed that Copilot Suggested Rename is currently under development and will launch initially as a web-based feature. It will be available to both personal and business OneDrive users through their browsers.
While desktop and mobile support has not yet been announced, future expansion is possible. By bringing AI-powered file naming directly into OneDrive, Microsoft is addressing a long-standing productivity challenge and making document management smarter and more efficient.
