OpenAI has introduced several new features to ChatGPT, enhancing both usability and response quality. The latest updates include a hidden gesture for controlling how much effort ChatGPT applies to a prompt, a table of contents feature for navigating lengthy conversations, and improvements to the default GPT-5.5 Instant model.
These changes aim to make ChatGPT more intuitive while helping users manage complex discussions and receive better responses.
Hidden Gesture Lets Users Control Response Effort
One of the most notable additions is a hidden gesture in the ChatGPT mobile app that allows users to select an intelligence level before sending a prompt.
By long-pressing the send arrow icon, users can access an intelligence picker that offers different response modes, including Instant, Thinking, and Extended. These options determine how much processing effort ChatGPT applies before generating a reply.
The feature is especially useful when users need more detailed answers than those provided by the standard Instant mode. Availability of intelligence levels may vary depending on a user’s OpenAI subscription plan.
This shortcut provides a faster alternative to navigating through menus and aligns with OpenAI’s broader push toward automated model selection.
New Table of Contents Improves Chat Navigation
OpenAI has also introduced a table of contents feature designed to help users navigate lengthy conversations more efficiently.
The tool automatically appears in chats containing five or more responses. Users can access it through a small icon located on the right side of the conversation window. Hovering over the icon reveals a structured list of topics discussed throughout the chat.
This allows users to quickly jump to specific sections without scrolling through the entire conversation. Currently, the feature is available only on ChatGPT’s web application, although many users hope it will eventually arrive on mobile and desktop versions.
GPT-5.5 Instant Receives Performance Upgrade
In addition to interface improvements, OpenAI has updated GPT-5.5 Instant, the default model used for most ChatGPT interactions.
The model, first introduced in May, was designed to deliver smarter responses with a cleaner communication style. The latest update further enhances readability, natural conversation flow, and practical assistance.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 Instant now produces responses that are easier to read, better paced, and less reliant on overly long explanations or excessive bullet points. The refinements are intended to create a more natural and user-friendly ChatGPT experience across both the app and API.
