Minister dispatches delegation to resolve goods transporters’ strike

Axle Load Limit

Islamabad, December 15, 2025 — Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed a high-level delegation to engage with the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance (PGTA) in a bid to resolve the ongoing goods transporters’ strike, which has entered its eighth consecutive day and is disrupting economic activity across the country.

The decision was taken during a Zoom meeting chaired by the federal minister to discuss PGTA’s concerns with the National Highway Authority (NHA) and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Minister of State for Finance Bilal Kiani also participated in the discussions. The meeting was attended by the Secretary Communications, Chairman NHA, Inspector General Motorways, officials from Pakistan Customs, and other relevant departments.

During the meeting, PGTA representatives highlighted key challenges faced by transporters, including enforcement of axle load limits, recent increases in toll taxes, and issues related to motorway policing and regulatory enforcement. They informed the minister that the prolonged strike has severely affected the movement of goods, causing supply chain disruptions and economic losses.

Taking serious notice of the situation, Abdul Aleem Khan stressed that extended strikes harm all stakeholders, particularly those linked to the transport and logistics sector. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving genuine issues through dialogue and consultation rather than confrontation.

The minister recalled that a five-member committee had earlier been formed under his chairmanship to address the transporters’ demands. He directed the delegation to immediately proceed to Karachi to continue negotiations with PGTA leaders and achieve a timely, mutually acceptable solution.

He also assured that matters related to driving license issuance, road safety, and accident prevention would be addressed on a priority basis. Emphasizing human safety, the minister said lives lost in road accidents are “our own children” and protecting them is a shared responsibility. He further announced ongoing plans to expand the Northern Bypass from six to eight lanes and to provide parking facilities at Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and Port Qasim.

PGTA representatives expressed satisfaction with the progress of talks and pledged full cooperation, reiterating their preference for constructive engagement.
