Islamabad, June 22, 2025 – In preparation for the upcoming sacred month of Muharram, Federal Minister for Power Division, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, has directed all electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) to implement urgent and comprehensive measures to guarantee uninterrupted electricity supply during the observance period.
In a formal letter addressed to the chairmen and chief executive officers of all DISCOs across the country, the minister emphasized the religious and social significance of Muharram, especially as millions of citizens are expected to attend religious gatherings, majalis, and processions. He stressed that any disruption in electricity supply could cause undue hardship to participants and negatively impact the peaceful observance of Muharram-related activities.
The minister highlighted the likelihood of extreme weather, including heatwaves, during Muharram, and instructed DISCOs to ensure that citizens are not subjected to additional distress due to power outages. He ordered the immediate repair and replacement of all faulty or damaged electrical equipment, especially in areas where large gatherings are expected.
To enhance preparedness, Leghari directed each DISCO to form specialized emergency response teams, which must remain on high alert during Youm-e-Ashur, the 10th of Muharram. These teams are to be backed by fully staffed and operational 24/7 control centers. He also emphasized the importance of constant coordination with district administrations, law enforcement agencies, and religious organizations to ensure smooth execution of power supply strategies during the holy month.
Additionally, the minister called for the installation of standby power systems, including generators and UPS units, at sensitive and high-priority locations such as imambargahs and procession routes. Advance notice regarding any scheduled maintenance or load management must be communicated clearly to religious institutions and local communities to avoid misunderstandings or disruptions.
Leghari warned that no negligence will be tolerated, and strict action would be taken against any lapse in duty. He has directed all DISCOs to submit detailed action-taken reports to the Power Division regarding their preparations for Muharram, especially concerning electricity continuity.
This directive underlines the government’s commitment to ensuring that the sanctity of Muharram is upheld through proactive infrastructure support and electricity reliability nationwide.
