Islamabad, July 19, 2025 – Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, announced a 50% reduction in port charges at the Karachi Port Trust (KPT).
This landmark initiative is expected to significantly benefit exporters while advancing Pakistan’s environmental and economic goals.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, the minister emphasized that the drastic reduction in port handling, storage, and vessel charges is aimed at decarbonizing the maritime sector and promoting efficient port logistics. “This move is a game-changer for Pakistan’s trade landscape,” the minister declared. “By reducing port-related expenses, we’re not only lowering the financial burden on businesses but also cutting emissions by minimizing idle time and congestion.”
The minister elaborated that the 50% cut will replace the previously scheduled 5% annual increase in port fees. This shift is expected to encourage increased dry bulk exports and improve vessel turnaround time, making Karachi’s port operations more agile and eco-friendly.
“This is more than just an economic adjustment—it’s a strategic transformation,” the minister stated. “A smarter, more efficient port system is essential for climate-conscious trade.”
The port reforms are part of a broader government strategy to modernize Pakistan’s port infrastructure and transition toward smart logistics. The minister announced the formation of a high-level committee tasked with slashing container dwell time by 70%, while also rolling out AI-powered monitoring systems and drone surveillance to improve port oversight and operational transparency.
The minister reaffirmed that these measures align with the Prime Minister’s vision for a greener, resilient economy. “Our ports are gateways to global trade. Making them sustainable ensures long-term prosperity and positions Pakistan as a responsible player in the global supply chain.”
As climate risks such as sea-level rise and maritime pollution grow, the minister stressed that integrating environmental resilience into port development is now a national priority. This decisive cut in KPT port charges underscores the government’s commitment to transforming Pakistan into a sustainable maritime hub.
