Islamabad, March 9, 2026 – In a significant move to ease congestion at the country’s busiest maritime hub, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, announced the waiver of demurrage charges on auctionable containers at the Karachi Port Trust (KPT). The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with KPT’s private terminals.
Under the new arrangement, KPT will not charge demurrage on auctionable and auctioned containers cleared within seven days of auction, providing relief to importers and streamlining port operations.
Speaking about the policy, Minister Chaudhry said the step represents a constructive engagement between the government, port authorities, and private stakeholders. “This waiver will help clear port congestion, expedite Customs clearance, and significantly reduce delays caused by stuck containers,” he noted.
The measure is expected to boost trade efficiency by freeing up space at the port for incoming transshipment cargo, allowing smoother movement of goods and reducing turnaround times for vessels.
Minister Chaudhry added that the initiative reflects KPT’s proactive approach to operational challenges and underscores its commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economic growth through collaboration with terminal operators.
Trade analysts welcomed the decision, highlighting that it will alleviate financial burdens on importers and help maintain uninterrupted supply chains during periods of high port activity.
By implementing this policy, KPT aims to enhance port efficiency, strengthen trade facilitation, and create a more business-friendly environment for stakeholders across the logistics and maritime sector.
