Islamabad, August 5, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has sounded the alarm, warning of urban flooding in Islamabad and Rawalpindi as powerful monsoon currents batter the region with intense rainfall.
In a red-alert advisory issued on Tuesday, the PMD warned that heavy downpours during the night and into August 6 are expected to swell local nullahs and water channels in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and surrounding areas. The low-lying urban zones of both cities are now under serious threat of submersion, prompting urgent calls for precautionary measures by residents.
According to the PMD’s forecast, the torrential monsoon system—fueled by both strong monsoon currents and a westerly trough—is expected to slam into northern Pakistan, including parts of Upper Punjab, the Potohar region, and Islamabad. The meteorological department emphasized that the already saturated soil in hilly and urban catchments around Rawalpindi and Islamabad could lead to dangerous runoff and rapid flooding.
The threat doesn’t stop there. Other major cities like Gujranwala, Lahore, and Sialkot have also been put on flood watch. Simultaneously, landslides and mudslides could cut off vital roads in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, and Galliyat.
Over the past 24 hours, Islamabad has already recorded significant rainfall—Saidpur received 7mm—while parts of Kashmir and KP also experienced storm activity. High humidity and scorching temperatures continue to blanket most of the country, compounding the impact of the incoming weather system.
The PMD has urged citizens of Rawalpindi and Islamabad to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and secure valuables. With more rain forecasted over the next 48 hours, all eyes remain on the skies as Islamabad and Rawalpindi brace for the full fury of the monsoon mayhem.
