Monsoon gains strength: PMD issues flood alerts

Pakistan Weather

Islamabad, July 12, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that the ongoing monsoon system is gaining momentum and may result in flash floods, urban flooding, and landslides in various parts of the country. The PMD has urged citizens to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable areas, as a strong weather system is likely to enter northern and central Pakistan starting July 13.

According to Ghulam Murtaza, a forecasting officer at PMD, weak monsoon currents currently entering Pakistan from the Arabian Sea are expected to intensify by tomorrow. “A potent westerly wave is approaching and is likely to collide with monsoon currents, triggering widespread heavy rainfall across the country,” he stated.

The PMD has issued a monsoon advisory effective from the evening of July 13 through July 14, warning that heavy to very heavy downpours could cause flash floods in local streams and nullahs across regions including Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Swat, Chitral, Dir, Abbottabad, Nowshera, Mardan, and parts of Punjab, Kashmir, and Balochistan.

Urban flooding is expected in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sargodha, Peshawar, and Nowshera. The PMD also cautioned about potential landslides and road blockages in hilly areas such as Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, and Galliyat.

Weather Forecast:

• Saturday: Hot and humid conditions are likely to persist in most regions. However, rain-thunderstorms may hit parts of North-East Punjab, South Punjab, Kashmir, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan by evening.

• Sunday: Widespread monsoon activity is forecast, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Potohar, Islamabad, and northern Punjab. Isolated heavy falls are likely.

In the past 24 hours, rain-wind/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls were recorded across South and Central Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Rainfall intensity varied with Rahim Yar Khan recording 47mm, Multan up to 28mm, and Sibbi receiving 32mm.

The PMD has reiterated its warning for residents and local authorities to remain vigilant during this intensified monsoon spell. Emergency services have also been advised to stay alert for potential evacuations or rescues in flood-prone areas.
