Monsoon rains continue to lash Karachi on Sunday: PMD

Weather Monsoon

Islamabad, June 28, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted continued monsoon activity in Karachi, predicting more rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

This marks another active spell in the ongoing monsoon season, which has already brought heavy downpours across several regions of the country.

According to the PMD’s latest weather advisory, partly cloudy conditions with chances of rain-wind/thunderstorms are expected at isolated locations across southern Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Badin, Thatta, Sajawal, Ghotki, Tharparkar, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, and Khairpur. Karachi, in particular, remains under the spotlight due to urban flooding concerns and frequent traffic disruptions triggered by heavy monsoon showers.

The PMD also provided forecasts for Saturday night, stating that rain-wind/thunderstorms are likely to affect Karachi and its surrounding districts including Jacobabad, Kashmore, Sukkur, and others. The PMD has urged residents in Karachi and vulnerable areas to stay alert, as the risk of local flooding and infrastructure damage remains high.

Nationally, the PMD has issued a warning that heavy to very heavy rainfall may cause flash floods in local streams and nullahs in areas such as Murree, Galliyat, Rawalpindi/Islamabad, and several districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Hill torrents in D.G. Khan, Musakhel, Barkhan, Khuzdar, Lasbela, and Kalat may also swell due to intense rain.

The PMD cautioned that strong winds and lightning during this monsoon spell could damage weak structures, including rooftops of Kacha houses, billboards, solar panels, and electric poles, particularly in urban hubs like Karachi. Landslides remain a threat in hilly regions, potentially blocking key roads.

Synoptic Situation:

Moist currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are penetrating most regions of Pakistan, including Karachi. These currents are expected to intensify further in the northern areas. A westerly wave is also likely to affect the upper parts of the country starting tonight.

Rainfall Highlights (Past 24 Hours):

Karachi witnessed moderate rainfall, with Surjani Town receiving 38 mm, Gulshan-e-Maymar 28 mm, and other areas such as Saadi Town and University Road also recording notable showers. Rainfall was also observed across Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The PMD reiterated that monsoon activity in Karachi is expected to persist, and citizens should remain cautious during travel and outdoor activities. Continuous updates from PMD will guide emergency response teams and help mitigate the risks associated with this active monsoon system in Pakistan.
