Monsoon system enters Sindh bringing heavy rains: PMD

Weather Monsoon

Islamabad, July 17, 2025 — A powerful monsoon system has entered Sindh, triggering widespread rainfall across the province and other parts of Pakistan, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed on Thursday.

The department stated that the system will persist over the next 24 hours, with Sindh expected to witness heavy to very heavy downpours, increasing the likelihood of urban flooding and flash floods in vulnerable areas.

According to the PMD, a low-pressure area (LPA) currently lies over Central Punjab, while a westerly wave is impacting the northern regions of the country. As a result, strong monsoon currents are affecting upper parts of Pakistan and are likely to remain active for the next 24 hours.

For Friday, the forecast indicates rain-wind/thundershowers in Sindh, northeastern and southern Balochistan, Kashmir, Islamabad, Punjab, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Isolated locations in Sindh, along with northeast and south Balochistan, may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall.

On Thursday, intermittent monsoon showers were recorded in Islamabad, Potohar region, Kashmir, northeast Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Central and southern Punjab as well as northeastern and southern Balochistan also saw isolated rainfall activity.

PMD Weather Alerts for July 17:

• Flash floods may occur in local nullahs and streams in Kashmir, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Potohar region, northeast Punjab, D.G. Khan, and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa areas such as Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Mansehra.

• Landslides or mudslides may disrupt travel in hilly terrains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galliyat, Murree, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

• Urban flooding is likely in low-lying zones of Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Peshawar, and Rawalpindi.

• Windstorms may damage crops, trees, electric poles, and solar panels. The public is advised to take precautionary measures.

Past 24 Hours

Widespread rain-wind/thundershowers were reported in Punjab, Islamabad, Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Significant rainfall was recorded in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and Mandi Bahauddin. Meanwhile, Sindh remained hot and humid but is now under active monsoon influence with major rainfall expected by Friday across multiple districts.
