Islamabad, August 21, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has sounded a high-alert warning as a powerful Monsoon system prepares to sweep across the country from August 23 to 29, bringing torrential rains, windstorms, and thundershowers.
The alert warns of flash floods, urban flooding, and landslides in vulnerable areas.
According to PMD, strong Monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal will start entering the upper regions of Pakistan from August 22. A westerly weather wave is also expected to hit northern areas on the same night, intensifying rainfall and storm activity.
Rainfall Forecast by Region
• Kashmir & Gilgit-Baltistan: Heavy to very heavy rainfall from August 23–27, increasing risk of landslides and overflowing streams.
• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Widespread rains from August 23–26 in Swat, Dir, Kohistan, Abbottabad, and adjoining districts.
• Punjab & Islamabad: Downpours from August 23–27, with heavy rain in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Murree. Southern Punjab areas like Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan may face scattered heavy showers on August 24 and 27.
• Sindh: Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mithi, and Mirpurkhas likely to receive rain from August 23 (night) to 26.
• Balochistan: Eastern and southern regions may face heavy rainfall from August 27–29, with early spells in Barkhan, Loralai, and Khuzdar.
Risks and Precautions
PMD cautions that intense Monsoon downpours may trigger flash floods in local streams, hill torrents, and low-lying urban areas of major cities including Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, and Gujranwala. Landslides and mudslides are feared in hilly regions, while strong winds and lightning may damage billboards, solar panels, and weak structures.
Authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert, while the public, travelers, and tourists are advised to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary movement in vulnerable zones.
