Monsoon Thundershowers to Grip Pakistan on August 3

Islamabad, August 2, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted that monsoon thundershowers will sweep across Pakistan on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

According to the PMD’s weather forecast, more rains and thundershowers, including scattered heavy and isolated very heavy falls, are expected in various regions including Sindh, northeast/southeast Balochistan, Kashmir, Punjab, Potohar Region, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in Sindh, southeast Balochistan, upper Punjab, Potohar Region, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir.

On Friday, August 2, 2024, similar weather conditions are expected with rains and thundershowers predicted for Sindh, Punjab, northeast/southeast Balochistan, Kashmir, Potohar Region, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Scattered heavy and very heavy falls are expected in Sindh, eastern Balochistan, Potohar Region, northeast Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir.

The PMD has issued a warning that these thundershowers may cause flash flooding in local nullahs and streams in various areas including Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Bannu, Kurram, Waziristan, Dera Ismail Khan, Orakzai, Khyber, Mohmand, Nowshera, Swabi, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, northeast Punjab, and hill torrents of D.G. Khan and Kashmir. Additionally, regions like Kalat, Khuzdar, Barkhan, Lasbela, Zhob, Loralai, Sibbi, Harnai, Awaran, Kohlu, Dera Bugti, Jhal Magsi, Naseerabad, Musa Khel, and Jaffarabad are also at risk. Heavy downpours may lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Sahiwal, Nowshera, and Peshawar on August 3 and 4. Similarly, low-lying areas of Sindh could also face urban flooding. Landslides may cause road closures in vulnerable hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan during this wet period.

Regarding the synoptic situation, the PMD stated that strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are continuously penetrating most central and southern parts of the country and are likely to enter the upper parts from this evening/night. A westerly wave is also expected to affect the northern parts of the country starting tonight.

In the past 24 hours, rains and thundershowers, with isolated heavy to very heavy falls, occurred in Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeast Balochistan, Kashmir, and lower Sindh. Rainfall measurements in millimeters include:

Punjab: Multan (Airport 22, City 18), Leh 21, Islamabad (Golla 20, Bokra 5, Airport 3, Zero Point 2, Syedpur 2), Khanpur 16, Bahawalpur (Airport 12, City 1), DG Khan 10, Kot Addu 7, Bhakkar 6, Bahawalnagar 5, Chakwal 3, Mangala 2, Gujarat 2, Joharabad 1, Mandi Bahauddin 1, Sheikhupura 1, Sialkot 1.

Sindh: Karachi (Kemari 27, DHA 19, MOS 14, Masroor Base 11, Quaid Abad 11, Orangi Mimar 10, Jinnah Terminal 8, University Road 7, Faisal Base 6, Gadap 5, Gulshan Hadid 5, Korangi 2, Hassan Square 2, Nazimabad 1, Sadar 1), Hyderabad 5, Jacobabad 3, Thatta 1.

Balochistan: Khuzdar 17, Lasbela 2, Sibbi 1.

Today’s highest recorded maximum temperatures were Nokundi at 44°C, Chilas at 43°C, and Dalbandin at 42°C.
