Motorcyclists expected to get up to 30 liters monthly subsidy

petrol shortage

Islamabad, March 29, 2026: The government is in the final stages of launching a targeted fuel relief initiative that will provide subsidized petrol to motorcyclists across Pakistan, as part of efforts to ease the burden of rising fuel costs amid the ongoing energy crisis.

According to official sources, the scheme—being developed under the supervision of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and the National IT Board—will allow registered motorcycle owners to receive a monthly petrol quota of up to 30 liters at subsidized rates.

The initiative introduces a digital, app-based distribution system designed to ensure transparency, efficiency, and targeted delivery of subsidies. To support the nationwide rollout, authorities have decided to procure approximately 24,000 mobile phones. These devices will be deployed at petrol pumps and will serve as the backbone of the new digital system.

Under the plan, oil marketing companies will be responsible for purchasing the mobile devices and supplying them to fuel stations. Around 12,000 petrol pumps are expected to be equipped with two dedicated mobile phones each. Additionally, each participating pump will allocate two separate fuel nozzles specifically for subsidized petrol.

Consumers—particularly motorcyclists and three-wheeler owners—will be able to access the subsidy through a mobile application using digital vouchers or QR codes. The system will verify users and track fuel consumption in real time, ensuring that beneficiaries do not exceed their allocated monthly quota, which is expected to range between 20 and 30 liters.

Officials confirmed that the mobile application has already been developed and is currently in its final testing phase. Once launched, the system will mark a major shift toward digitized subsidy management, reducing the chances of misuse and improving accountability in fuel distribution.

The government is also considering expanding the scheme to include small vehicles up to 800cc, although a final decision has yet to be made. This potential expansion reflects a broader strategy to extend relief to a wider segment of low- and middle-income consumers.

The subsidized petrol scheme is part of a comprehensive plan to tackle Pakistan’s energy challenges, with contingency measures also being prepared to address emergency supply disruptions. Authorities have already initiated monitoring mechanisms at petrol pumps nationwide to ensure smooth implementation.

An official announcement regarding the launch of the QR code-based fuel subsidy system is expected soon, offering much-needed relief to millions of daily commuters reliant on motorcycles.
